The three that matter
utm_source
Where the click comes from: newsletter, instagram, partner.
utm_medium
Through what kind of channel: email, social, cpc, qr.
utm_campaign
For which push: winter-sale, launch-v2.
The conventions that save reports
Four UTM naming rules
1 · All lowercase. To an analytics tool, Newsletter and newsletter are two different sources — and your report counts them twice.
2 · Hyphens, not spaces. A space becomes %20 once encoded: readable by machines, painful for you. winter-sale reads well on both sides.
3 · A vocabulary written down somewhere. The table of allowed sources and mediums fits on ten lines — it is the most profitable document in your agency: without it, everyone invents and the reports drift apart.
4 · Never UTMs internally. A click on your own menu tagged utm_source=site overwrites the visitor's real origin. UTMs go on the links coming IN, never on your navigation.
The honest limit
UTMs know nothing about revenue
A UTM is a label on a front door: essential, free, standard. But it stops where your analytics tool stops — at traffic.
Tying the visit to the sale that follows, sometimes days later, is another job: attribution. The two complement each other — and our links carry your UTMs without touching them.
What a UTM can tell you
“412 visits came from the newsletter.”
What it will never tell you
“… and they brought in €3,240.”
Frequently asked questions
Do you have to fill in all five parameters?
No. Source, medium and campaign are enough in most cases. utm_term is for the paid keyword in search ads, utm_content to tell two variants of the same message apart.
Why does my accented letter become %C3%A9?
That is URL encoding — needed for the address to travel without breaking. Analytics tools decode it on arrival. If you want labels readable everywhere, write them without accents.
Do UTMs slow the page down?
No — they are inert parameters in the URL. Their only cost is cosmetic: the address gets long. That is exactly what a short link solves: the UTM travels inside it, out of sight.
Does this tool keep my URLs?
No. Everything is computed in your browser; nothing goes to a server. Reload the page and it all disappears.
Shorten your UTM link
A short link carries your UTMs without showing them, can be read out over the phone, and can be edited after publishing. It is the natural next step from this tool.
