E-commerce: every Stripe sale traced to its link
Stripe tells you how much you earned. It does not tell you whether it was Tuesday’s story, the newsletter, or the ad that brought the buyer. Subtraq connects the two: every payment traces back to the link that came before it, in the currency it was paid in.
The blind spot
The origin of every Stripe payment
Your Stripe dashboard is accurate to the cent. It does not answer the one question that decides your budget for next month: which of your posts drove that number.
Subtraq places a short link in front of every publish. The click is counted, the person is remembered, and when they pay, Stripe notifies us. The sale attaches to the link that preceded it — and if no known click preceded it, it is recorded unattributed, and the report says so rather than filing it somewhere.
What you read at month end
Sold.
- The storyA short link in the story, the sale right alongside.
- The newsletterOne link per edition — revenue reads edition by edition.
- The adRevenue on one side, spend on the other.
- The QR on the boxPrinted once, retargetable after, counted at every scan.
- The videoThe link in the description, and what it brought in.
- The bio linkOne link per platform, so the numbers never blend.
- The affiliateA distribution channel like any other, counted like any other.
- The Stripe paymentThe amount and currency, exactly as Stripe sends them.
- The unattributedListed separately, never spread around at random.
Nine lines, one question: which one paid. Amounts are from your register, not estimated from clicks.
Three ways to record a sale
Depending on how you collect payment — and without ever touching the store’s code for the first two.
Stripe
You paste a Subtraq address into Workbench, and the signing secret Stripe gives you comes back to Subtraq. The signature is mandatory: it is what grants access, not the address — without it, no one can write revenue into your account.
Order forms
Systeme.io, Tally, Typeform, Brevo, WordPress with Elementor: paste a Subtraq link into the “redirect after submit” field, and each submission becomes an attributed lead. The amount comes in via Stripe or the API.
Everything else
Your server sends the sale: an amount in cents, a currency, and an invoice number as the key — replaying the call does not count it twice. In the other direction, each conversion can be forwarded to Zapier or Make.
A store’s channels
The channel is where the link was published — not where it points. That distinction is what makes the sentence “what Instagram earned this month” exist.
30
days attribution window, by default
0
lines of code to add to the store
1
sale per payment, even if Stripe resends it
Common objections from stores
Four objections, including one where the honest answer is “no.”
“What about Shopify?”
“Does a refund get deducted automatically?”
“What about subscriptions?”
“An ad blocker will break everything.”
What changes on a Monday morning
You will know what to cut. And what to double.
A store distributes in the same month a story, two posts, a newsletter, an ad, and a QR printed on its shipping boxes. At month end, revenue is known to the cent — where it came from, not so much.
Without attribution, decisions come from gut feeling: keep the ad because it seems to work, drop the newsletter because it takes time. And you are wrong half the time, without ever knowing it.
With it, every decision rests on a single line: the newsletter earned this much, the ad earned this much against that spend, the QR earned that. You know what to cut and what to double — and you know it on Monday, not at quarter end.

Does this require touching my store’s code?
No, if you collect via Stripe: the connection is made in the Stripe dashboard and in Subtraq, never on the site. Order forms connect the same way, through their post-submit redirect field.
In what currency are sales recorded?
In the one Stripe sends. Stripe amounts are already expressed in the smallest currency unit, exactly Subtraq’s convention: there is no conversion, so no chance of being off by a factor of a hundred.
What happens if Stripe sends the same payment twice?
It is counted once. Deduplication is based on the payment identifier, not the event identifier: that is the only key that holds when the same payment arrives via two different event types.
How does a sale find its link?
By first click. Once the first contact is recorded for a person, nothing displaces it, and the click must fall within the workspace’s attribution window — thirty days by default. A bot click never gets credit for a sale.
What if the buyer never clicked one of my links?
The sale is recorded as unattributed and displayed as such. A report that invents a plausible origin is worse than an incomplete one.
Can we send a sale from our own server?
Yes. The API accepts a sale with an amount in cents, a currency, and an invoice number as the idempotency key. The server key must never reach a browser: an amount posted from a page is an amount anyone can write.
Is Shopify supported?
Not directly. A Shopify order can come in through Zapier or Make, which call Subtraq’s API; you need an API key and a workflow to build. The one-click connection does not exist and is not promised here.
Collecting payment another way?
Systeme.io, Tally, Typeform, Calendly, Cal.com, Brevo, WordPress with Elementor, Stripe, Zapier, and Make each have their own guide, checked against official documentation and dated.
