Bitly alternative
Bitly shortens your links from the United States. Yours can stay in Europe.
Bitly is the best-known link shortener: you hand it a long address, it hands back a short one. It is an American company, its data lives under American law, and its free plan has tightened to five links a month. Looking for a European alternative is no longer a data officer's quirk.
The move, in short
Shorten at Bitly, measure in an American tool, prove it in a spreadsheet.
One European tool, from the link to the sale.
The shortener is only half the move: if the measuring stays with an American giant, the GDPR question has simply changed address.
In practice
What “European” actually changes
The law that applies
Data hosted at Hetzner, in the European Union, under European law. No transfer to the United States to document in your records of processing.
The interface and support
The interface, the reports you send your clients, and the human answering your emails — all in your language, English or French.
The invoice
A European invoice, clean VAT, and no surprise conversion on your card statement every month.
An honest look around
Two serious tools. Only one counts the sales.
Pages titled “Bitly alternatives” that only ever mention their own product are advertising in disguise. The truth: URLR exists, it is European, and it is good — we published the detailed comparison, with figures sourced and dated.
What separates them fits in one sentence: URLR counts a link's visits; Subtraq ties the link to the revenue it brought in — ad spend imported, white-label reporting for your clients.
URLR
French, GDPR-compliant, six languages, a very good shortener — the legitimate number one on this search. If your need stops at the short link and visit statistics, it will serve you well.
Questions about moving over
Is Bitly really a GDPR problem?
“Problem” is judged case by case — that is your data officer's job. The fact: Bitly, Inc. is an American company and its privacy policy describes processing in the United States. For many European organisations that is a transfer to frame properly; for others, a reason to choose European from the start.
What about Bitly's free plan?
As recorded in August 2026 on their public page: five links a month on the free plan. Ours gives 10, with two client workspaces and sales tracking included — because our free plan is how we get known, not a trap.
Can I bring my Bitly links over?
Your destinations, yes — CSV export, then import here. The bit.ly addresses themselves belong to Bitly; no competitor can keep them alive in its place. The move happens by republishing the new addresses wherever you have control.
What if I only want to shorten, without measuring sales?
Then compare us with URLR and take what suits you — our comparison exists for that. The day a client asks you “how much did it bring in?”, you will know where to find us.
Ten links moved. Zero euros.
The free plan covers the full trial: CSV import, custom domain, sales tracking. If the tool doesn't hold up to comparison, you will have lost a quarter of an hour.
